Civic Beat with Nyesha McCauley – 10/13/2026

Guest: Nadia Sims, poet and spoken word artist

Topic: The Civic Power of Poetry: What Can a Poem Do for a City?

When we think about civic life, we tend to think about government, elections, and public meetings. But artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers and storytellers also play an important role in shaping how communities understand themselves.

In this episode of Civic Beat, Nyesha McCauley sits down with Nadia Sims, Poet Laureate of Manchester, CT to explore the civic power of art- and the role artists can play in creating connection, belonging, dialogue and civic imagination.

What happens when a city treats its artists not simply as entertainers, but as civic partners? Because artists don’t just help us see the city we have.

Sometimes, they help us imagine the city we could become.

Because a thriving small-business community isn’t just good for the economy—it helps shape the character, vitality and future of the city. Be sure to watch it on AccessTV.org Channel 20: AccessTV.org Channel-20
